Continuous, rhythmic, and deeply different massage.

If you've never had a Kahuna massage before, the easiest way to describe it is this: imagine a full-body treatment that moves like the ocean. Long, sweeping strokes travelling from your shoulders all the way down to your feet without stopping. No clinical "five minutes on the neck, five minutes on the calves." Just one continuous, flowing rhythm that works in time with your breath.

It's a Hawaiian healing tradition and it's been practised for centuries.

We offer it at Soul Body Massage because Brisbane needed somewhere to come for this specific kind of bodywork. The sort of treatment that does more than just knead out your shoulders and send you back into traffic.

  • "The treatment was like being wrapped in a nurturing cocoon where my mind calmed, soul was soothed and muscles relaxed. Eugenia is a goddess!"

What a Ka Huna massage actually involves

You'll be on a warmed table, draped lightly with a sarong, with warm oil and slow music holding the pace of the work. I use my hands, forearms, and sometimes elbows in long, continuous strokes that travel the full length of your body without interruption. Gentle stretches and slow rocking weave through the session, and the pressure shifts from light to firm depending on what your body asks for that day.

There is no fixed sequence. The work is shaped, moment by moment, by your breath and the tension I find as I move.

Most clients say it feels less like a massage and more like being held.

What to expect at your first appointment

  1. Before you arrive. Eat something light an hour or two beforehand, drink water, and skip heavy perfume so the oils can do their work.

  2. The conversation. We'll spend a few minutes talking about how you're feeling, physically and emotionally, and what you'd like the session to focus on.

  3. The treatment. Undress to your level of comfort, settle on the table under a sarong, and the work begins. Sessions run 60, 90, or 120 minutes. Ninety is the sweet spot for a first Kahuna.

  4. Afterwards. You'll feel slow, soft, and a little floaty. Try not to book back-to-back meetings if you can avoid it. Drink water, take your time, and let the work settle into the rest of your day.

You won't be asked to chant, journal, or do anything that makes you uncomfortable. This is a massage. A very good one.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Kahuna massage is a traditional Hawaiian healing practice built on long, continuous, flowing strokes that travel across the whole body. The word kahuna means "keeper of the secret," referring to the Hawaiian healers who carried this knowledge through generations. Unlike most Western massage, Kahuna works on the physical body, the nervous system, and the energetic body at the same time.

What makes it distinctive is the philosophy it's held within. Each session is guided by the seven principles of Huna, the Hawaiian wisdom tradition that shapes how the work is offered:

    • IKE (Awareness): the world is what you think it is.

    • KALA (Freedom): there are no limits, only the ones we hold.

    • MAKIA (Focus): energy flows where attention goes.

    • MANAWA (Presence): now is the moment of power.

    • ALOHA (Love): to love is to be happy with.

    • MANA (Strength): all power comes from within.

    • PONO (Alignment): effectiveness is the measure of truth.

These principles aren't spoken aloud during the session, but they're felt in the rhythm of the strokes, the quality of presence, and the intention held throughout.

  • Kahuna works on the body and the mind at the same time.

Physically, the continuous flowing strokes warm the soft tissue, support circulation and the lymphatic system, soften fascia, and release muscular tension. Because the practitioner moves around the table and works with both hands and forearms, the strokes travel from foot to shoulder in one unbroken movement, helping the body release more deeply than spot-by-spot pressure can reach.

Emotionally, the slow rhythm settles the nervous system and gives the body space to let go of stress it has been holding without realising.

That dual effect, physical and emotional working as one, is what makes Kahuna more than a massage. It's a slow, attentive return to yourself.

  • A standard massage works in sections. Back, then legs, then shoulders, with brief pauses as the therapist moves and re-positions. Kahuna doesn't work that way.

The defining quality of Kahuna is continuous flow. The therapist moves around the table, using long, sweeping strokes with hands and forearms that can travel from your foot all the way up your back in a single unbroken motion. There are no pauses, no spot-by-spot focus, no interruptions to the rhythm. The body is met as a whole, not as a collection of parts.

This shows up in three ways:

    • The pace is slower, steadier, and more rhythmic than most Western massage, which lets the nervous system drop further.

    • The depth comes from invitation rather than force. Tension releases because the body is allowed to soften, not because pressure pushes through it.

    • The integration is what people remember most. The session feels woven together, more like a journey than a sequence of techniques.

For people who have mostly experienced clinical or sports-style massage, Kahuna often feels like the first time they've actually been allowed to rest.

  • Kahuna massage is suitable for most adults, and especially well suited to anyone who feels they need more than a standard hour on the table can offer.

It's particularly beneficial for people carrying stress, overwhelm, or the kind of nervous-system fatigue that doesn't fully release with a regular massage. It supports those holding chronic muscular tension or postural strain from desk work, parenting, or long hours on their feet. It's a beautiful choice for clients moving through a life transition, whether that's recovery, grief, burnout, or simply the closing of a long, demanding season. And it's often the right answer for anyone who has tried clinical or sports-style massage and felt that something deeper was missing.

You don't need to be flexible, fit, or experienced with massage. You don't need a specific complaint to bring. Kahuna meets the body wherever it is.

A few situations call for a conversation before booking.

We do not offer pregnancy massage.

If you arerecovering from recent surgery, currently in cancer treatment, or living with a heart or circulatory condition, please mention it when you reach out. We may adjust the work, or for now recommend a gentler option such as our relaxation or remedial massage. There's always a way to care for you, even if today isn't the day for Kahuna.
